Simply put – they are a huge part of your branding. And about that I have talked before. So as any other branding part – the social media is also very important. There you also get a chance to represent your brand in the very best way that you can! By this I mean – your social media outlets gotta reflect your branding, and not only through the communication and all the visuals. Here you also have those things called profile pictures and covers, and these are the ones you should start with.
Everytime that I come across some brand’s or company’s FB page, and see that they are using this cute flower photo as their cover I end up whining whyyyyy… I mean, seriously. How can you call yourself as a professional brand or company and use those random cute images on your social media outlets as covers, where you should definitely put something related to your branding and business? I mean you can, but don’t think that anyone will take you seriously. It doesn’t particularly has to be something that serious, but definitely something either related to your brands mission/vision, or it might be even your product. But the colors, tones, the whole vibe should definitely be you.
So what makes a good social media cover?
• Dimensions. Pay attention to those! The large, banner-sized cover photos allow companies to express their online persona or reflect their established branding. Using the recommended image size for your cover photo, no matter which platform you’re on, is the key. Proper sizing ensures the image works best within the space—and with an overlapping profile photo. So be sure your image doesn’t look distorted or cut off. And make sure the image isn’t too small either – as then you will loose the quality!
• Matches with the rest of your brand. Your cover photo takes up a lot of real estate on your profile. Because of that, it needs to work seamlessly with the rest of your branding. If the colors in your cover photo don’t match your website/logo colors, your page can look disjointed. Visitors may think you don’t care about your social media presence. Tho your cover photo and profile picture certainly don’t need to match, but the images should use a complementary color palette.
• Call to action. They recommend only 20% of the text on those cover images, but you definitely can use some infographics or particular design elements! And those should be very much calling to some particular action. Either it is discount announcement, or free gift giveaway invitation – use those smartly! And make sure it passes the right message of your brand!
Apart from all those – it also gotta be outstanding, unique and original. Leave those free cute images for your personal profile, be more professional within your brands! You should also focus on your clients and fans: if there’s a popular product that your brand sells well, or you’ve got this photo of your workdesk liked by everyone – use it! Make even more sales in this case! And don’t be afraid of changing cover photos often! If there’s some particular event that you’d like to tell your followers about – do it with the cover photo! That can be used for promotions also! And the most importantly – be positive, inviting and friendly. Smile in those profile pictures, play with the positive colors! Happy is what catches the eye and so very much wanted!
