Look, I know, I totally get it… It can be so hard at first. That happened to me as well… But let me tell you something – everything’s easier than it might look at first. I don’t mean to say that blogging is easy, or that it will be super easy for you. But there are certain things which require some patience and little peace of mind, and these are the keys to success!
I know that starting your new blog is something very exciting, and there patience isn’t the best friend.
When I started my own blog, I’ve built it in one day, because I was going nuts about the thought that it can take longer. I wanted everything to be done and ready as soon as possible, and oh boy – I was wrong.
I’m not saying that this is impossible, – what I mean to say is that you should give more of a thought and be more specific and clear about the actual idea of your blog. You do really need to make some big decisions, which can later do wonders! And sometimes the later doesn’t really mean a year, or two. Sometimes it can take a month, or even less to drive quite a big traffic to your blog, build a community around it, and get some first followers and readers. But that happens only if you start it in a right away, and if you know where to begin from.
In this post I’d like to talk more about starting your new blog and what’s the right way to do it, however – this can also apply as a double check if you currently have one!
Let’s begin with asking yourself the most important question: what this blog is going to be about? What topics am I going to cover, and what kind of content I will be providing to my readers?
Not sure yet? Well, my friend, you gotta. Of course, you can try and start blogging about everything, but that can end up more as like nothing… Yes, having a clear idea is something you should start with. And so here’s the rest of the steps you need to take before you publish your first blog post!
• DECIDE ON YOUR NICHE
I know this can be tough, but you actually know the answer to this one! How come? Well, just think of 3 things that you’re most passionate about, or interested in, or simply – what you love to do the most?!
Either it’s dressing up and going out, which means that everything when it comes to fashion is your thing! Or maybe you love having those cozy evenings at home where the smell of freshly baked pastries is something that you find most inspiring of them all! Yes, maybe you love to bake, and kitchen is your favorite place of your home! Or maybe opposite, maybe you’d rather spend more time in a bathroom, trying the new makeup products that you’ve just bought and now you’ve got quite a few to recommend, not to mention your skills of applying makeup on your face! But, if books and movies is your gem – well, my friend, you probably are going to be the first person your readers will turn up for when it comes to ‘what book should I read’ or ‘the best movie to watch on a Friday night’. Haha, these already sound like a great topic for your first blog post, don’t they?
So. What I mean to say is that whatever it is you really like and enjoy doing most of the time, and you feel like in your own element – this is it! That’s what your blog is going to be about! However, I’d highly recommend sticking to one or couple of niches at first! If you like beauty and everything makeup – then I think it would be cool enough to add some fashion inspirations as well!
Though if you’re more into books and movies, then maybe you can team up that with some kitchen stories.. You know, something that could be cool to enjoy on a Friday movie night with your beloved ones, family and friends!
• BUILT A HOME FOR YOUR BLOG
By home I mean – decide where you’re going to host your blog. So yeah, picture your blog as a house! There are heaps of free platforms like blogger.com or wordpress.com that are quite a fair enough for every beginner. But, think further! Your blog is going to grow, and to make that easier and quicker – I’d highly recommend thinking about a budget and actually hosting your blog somewhere more trustworthy and professional. In this case I’d always say that self-hosted wordpress.org is the best! Why? Well, there you get the opportunity to design your blog just the way you want it, as well as to built a stronger SEO and definitely to bring more of a quality. However yes, for self-hosted wordpress.org you need to buy your own hosting and a domain, and these are just as important as a foundation and bricks for a house! But don’t worry – I also got you covered with those! I personally recommend going with Siteground.com deals as they are definitely something I trust and find very professional. I mean here we are talking not only about the foundation and bricks, but also about the security and strength of your house. And that better be good! You have to allow yourself to sleep without a worry that your blog might be hacked, or even if that happens – siteground will be super fast to help and sort it out for you! So hey, give this a good thought, as this is really important!
• CREATE A STRONG AND UNIQUE DESIGN
Alright, since we are done with the foundation and bricks, and we are now safe and sure that this is going to work – let’s spice it up! Let’s put the roof on your house, let’s paint the walls and make it the prettiest in this neighborhood. Haha, ok, I’ll soon be done with that house metaphor, I promise. But when it comes to design part – woah, this is maaaa thing, buddy, oh yes!
Blog design is crucial. PERIOD. It can break or make a sale. This is the first thing that will attract your every potential reader, follower, whatever. People are very much into the visual things, and there’s a huuuge philosophy behind this. But let’s get more specific: you need to think of your blog design as something really important, and here again – I’d always say that you should better invest. I mean, you can do it yourself, you can learn how to do it. But design is definitely more than just pretty color palette, and well put fonts. Design is a lot about strength and professionalism, as well as a lot about your blog’s identity itself. I know that you might feel like you’re the only one who knows how your blog should look like, chances are you don’t know at all, either way – talk about this with someone. Or even better – talk with a professional designer, do a research, look for someone that you feel will be suitable enough to help you out! Every designer’s work has some special aesthetics, and maybe even a style. Make sure all that matches your idea about your blog’s design! Though whenever you will decide to work with a particular designer – you will be asked heaps of questions, and one of those will definitely be regarding the color. In this case – make sure you read this post of mine! Color is a lot about psychology, and that works in very funny ways for everyone! Oh, do also give a look at my portfolio and see that maybe that designer is me! Yes, I do offer custom blog and web design services, and I do provide with a FREE 30min consultation. I’m always here to help and advice for the best, keep that in mind! If not me, I might have some other designer as a referral up in my sleeve ;) And make sure that you get enough of the graphics for your upcoming social media outlets, even blog post categories, logos and so! Because you’re going to attract your readers and followers not only from your blog!
• START FILLING YOUR BLOG
Now the time has come to built that super interesting and unique content of yours. But, keep in mind that content isn’t only plain text of your blog posts! You need to create some pages such as about, contact, categories, faq, etc for your blog. People need to be able to contact you, and that’s actually super important and has to be easily found! As well as they will definitely be into learning more about you, and for this create an about page as well as faq where you will cover all those questions others might be likely to ask. As per categories – well with these you get a chance to tell everyone whom just stumbled upon your blog what is it all about! And then when they click on each category – make sure you have prepared a post or two for before the launch! Yes, you must have something to show already, otherwise – why your readers are here in a first place? So go, prepare some posts, include visuals such as photography and make your blog strong with it’s content!
• BUILT A COMMUNITY – GET SOCIAL
By no ends I don’t mean only instagram, pinterest, twitter and facebook regarding this step! I also mean an email list, engagement and being social, active on other blogs. Running a pretty instagram account isn’t enough! I mean, for some it can be, but you’re going to grow even bigger, aren’t you?! So, put yourself together, create some kind of a routine, be into discipline and get out there! Create all those social media outlets and go engage with others! Don’t forget about their blogs as well – make sure you leave enough of the comment on other blogger’s posts, as by this you’ll be driving lots of traffic back to yours! And when they’ll come around – make sure you let them know how to keep up with your upcoming posts, – create an email list and keep them updated weekly!
• NOW STAY CONSTANT WITH EVERYTHING AND KEEP GROWING
Create a routine of which others (your readers) will be aware as well! Have some kind of a timetable, for example: write some specific post on Monday, and then maybe other on Wednesday or Thursday. Analyze what days are the best when it comes to traffic and stick with those! Yes, there are chances that your readers will be checking out your blog on some specific days, and even at some specific time. So make sure they’ll find something new whenever they come across!
Analyze other bloggers, what do they do, how do they grow. Make sure you stick to your gut, and you’re unique, but don’t be afraid of stepping out of the comfort zone! Give yourself a challenge from time to time, focus on one thing at a time, and work on those hard! Try to treat your followers and readers with something special from time to time, offer them some discounts, freebies, cheatsheets, free special recipes, etc so they will be more convinced to stick around! Make this journey exciting for yourself and others. Do little brainstorm at least weekly regarding your blog’s growth. And be transparent, be yourself, be honest! People will keep up with your blog not because you’re doing something what others might say is right, or something trendy… People will stick around because it’s you, and you’re so damn special!
It won’t be easy, and there will be ups and downs. But that’s what makes it all so interesting and fun to do! Whenever you’ll have some of the self-doubt or second thoughts – give yourself a break, take deep breaths, allow yourself to source for some inspiration and don’t frustrate yourself to do it just for a sake of doing it! You will need breaks and they are totally fine. You will lack of inspiration and confidence, and that’s fine as well. Because you will get over it, and it will turn out as a great lesson that you’ve just learnt! Exactly, see every experience as a new lesson that needs to be learnt, either it’s good or bad – everything will be just fine in the end!
And don’t forget that I’m always here to support, advice and help you for the best! If you need someone just to talk to – I’m here, my friend. I’m always here!
Don’t be afraid to ask for a help, but make sure you give some in return when the time will come. Blogging world is a lot about supporting one another. So let’s spread all that positivity and support with fellow bloggers around, and see this life experience turning into something magical!
